" I, me, myself..."

"I" - This is one single alphabet among all the alphabets which has it's own meaning and is SO BIG & HEAVY that it create problems in our lives...

And in today's lives this "I" has become starting point of lot of issues among us...
Baba Bulleh Shah has beautifully written:

Makkay gayaan, gal mukdee naheen
Bhaawain sow sow jummay parrh aaeey...

Going to Mecca is not the ultimate
Even if hundreds of prayers are offered

Ganga gayaan, gal mukdee naheen
Bhaawain sow sow gotay khaeeay

Going to River Ganges is not the ultimate
Even if hundreds of cleansing (Baptisms) are done

Gaya gayaan gal mukdee naheen
Bhaawain sow sow pand parrhaeeay

Going to Gaya is not the ultimate
Even if hundreds of worships are done

Bulleh Shah gal taeeyon mukdee
Jadon May nu dillon gawaeeay

Bulleh Shah the ultimate is
When the “I” is removed from the heart!

Rang...

Wishing all a very Happy Holi, the festival of colors when everyone looks like coming out of color factory. It reminds me of qawaali Aamir Khusrau wrote.

Aamir khusrau wrote few lines:

Aaj rang hai ri maa rang hai ri...
Moray mehboob kay ghar rang hai ri...

Here Rang is some different kind of glow in atmosphere which one can see around when one's beloved is around. Same way on the festival of colors everywhere its just colors colors and colors.

Lets try to make this world more colorful by spreading love and happiness.

Sufi Concert...

Last weekend was very well spent as me and Samira went to the Quli Khan’s Tomb at Qutub Minar for the “Dharohar” Sufi concert as a part of the Times Delhi Festival. (Courtsey : SP Bhaaji)

Though we missed the performances by Wadalis and Sabri Bros on Saturday but still never wanted to miss the sunday's performances by Mangniyars from Rajasthan and Kailash Kher's.

So, after finishing brunch at Tyagi's (Manish & Priyanka) we reached the venue at 5:30 pm. The performance by mangniyars was great as ever with sufi kalams like Dum Mast Qalandar and songs to welcome guests like "Nimbuda" and "Keseriya balam". To add the flavour to the performance there was this jamming session between Khartals and Dholaks, superb it was.

And there comes 4 feet tiny man with tallest name ever "Kailash" with superb voice and awesome aalaps in between. Started performance with sufi songs like tere bin nahin lagda, saiyaan, deewaani. Electric atmosphere it was with great performance by his band.

Thing that amazed me was the kind of interest young guys and gals in his songs which gave me some relief as to still people are interested in listening to songs like "Jaana Jogi de naal" and Allah ke Bande...

To end this :

Chal bullehya othe chaliye jithe wasde anne,
Na koi teri jaat pehchaane na koi tainu manne.

Here baba bulleh shah says that " lets me go to the place where the residents are blind(anne) so that no one can understand the castes or creed and there is no disparity..."

Jana Jogi de Naal

Yea... it's been quiet sometime that i havn't posted again. Lot of travelling and then work and above all life. I met Amit Khosla on one of my trip to mumbai another fan of Sufi n Khan Saheb (Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan) and it was pleasure to meet Amit bhaaji.

Anyway, i was listening to this amazing qawwali sung by Khan Saheb "Ni Main Jana Jogi de Naal".
It's written by Baba Bulleh Shah and its so awsomely written that its beyond explanation and the way Khan Saheb has sung it, it's amazing. It tells how badly one wants to be with "Jogi". "Jogi" here is HIM but it also can be used for one's beloved.

In this qawwali, lover so much wants to be with the beloved that she is ready to do anything.

Koi Kissay De Naal Koi Kissay De Naal
Per Main Jogi De Naal Naal
Jadon Dee Main Jogi Dee Hoyee
Main Wich Main Na Reh Gayee Koi

(he is trying to say that everyone is with someone or the other but i wanna be just with my beloved. Since when i have given myself to my beloved, there nothing left which i can say its mine everything is HIS only.)

Ranjha Ranjha Karde
Ni Main Aapay Ranjha Hoi
Sadeyo ni Mainu Deedo Ranjha
Heer Na Aakho Koi

Ni Main Jana Jogi De Naal
Kannee Mundaran Pa Ke

(Here he is saying that since when i have started taking his name as "Ranjha" i have started liking only one name and thats his so don't call me call me by my name "Heer" anymore call me "ranjha" only coz it's him only. "Heer-Ranjha" - Famous lovers in culture on punjab)

It's just some part of that qawwali which depicts the kind of love n dedication that was there but i wonder if this makes any sense to anyone today... hehehe ...

Good Human Being...

In recent times, I felt the need of being close to sufism or sufi writings. The reason for that is that people these days are not good at soul, they are fake, but still they would go to all these "Satsangs & Sankirtans" held by all types of gurus and babas but wot they dunn realise is the importance of being good human being first and i really don't know whether all these "Babas" preach that or not.

One of the most important thing that sufism tried to teach was "One should be a good human being at heart" and then only one should look for God because till the time you are not a good human being it makes no difference where you are a priest or a butcher.

As baba bulleh shah wrote:

Je Rub(God) Milda Nahateyaan Dhoteyan,
Te Milda Dadduan(frogs) Macchhian(fishes) nu,
Je Rub Milda Madhi Masani,
Te Milda Chham Chidikhiyaan nu,
Je Rub Milda Jungal Wele,
Te Milda Gauaan Vacchhian nu,
Bulleh Shah Rub Usnu Milda,
Te Niyataan Jinhaan Diyaan Acchhian...

Here baba bulleh shah is trying to say that "if you think that one who takes bath everyday and remains clean gets God then fishes and frogs should get HIM. and if you get to meet GOD only by roaming around in jungle n mountains then cow heards and other animals should get HIM much before then anyone else. But only those who are good at heart get God. So, it is important to be a good human being first.

Comeback...

Here i come back again after years to write something about the subject which I cherish a lot and that was the only reason why i started writing about "Sufism & Sufi Writings". And that's why i am starting it again...

It was a long journey for me to reach the year 2007 where i am
still struggling to take off the loads of my past and present situations. But all through these years i read about suifism and also heard lot of Sufi music especially by Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Saheb(NFAK) , Abida Parveen and Rahat Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan who is successor of NFAK.

But to my own surprise i have become agnostic and stopped believing in GOD, i know lot of you would think that how can i relate to something like sufism or sufi writings then. Well, my answer to that would be that you don't have to believe in the existence of God to understand what people like Amir Khusrau or Baba Bulleh Shah wrote.

Am i making any sense???

Another reason for my comeback is the company of excellent journalists, writers and editors. People like Percy Fernandez, whom i call "Percy Bhai" because he is a man of multiple interests and writes so well. Sandeep Pal, whom i call "Bhaaji (big brother in Punjabi)",
Nidhi Joshi, Shali Ittaman, Kudrat Bhatia, Kanika, Prachi... all of them write so well and they all write in totally different styles.

So i thought let me also start...

Amir Khusrau Dehlavi (1253-1325 AD), an important n vital part of sufi writing.

Amir Khusrau Dehlavi (1253-1325 AD), a prolific classical poet associated with royal courts of more than seven rulers of Delhi Sultanate, is also a household name in much of North India and Pakistan, through hundreds of playful riddles, songs and legends attributed to him. Through his enormous literary output and the legendary folk personality, Khusrau represents one of the first (recorded) Indian personages with a true multi-cultural or pluralistic identity.

Khusrau's pahelis (riddles), dohas (couplets) and geets (songs) seem to have been orally transferred from generation to generation by Qawwals, mirasees (professional singers), bhands (stage performers), women-folk who were employed by aristocratic families to look after children and perform other daily chores, and of course the family members themselves. He wrote "Hindvi Poetry". Its always been debatable issue that whether its his or not. But he wrote very beautifully.

One of the most prolific genres that Amir Khusrau is ascribed to have composed is Paheli (riddle). Pahelis are short pieces of verse with usually two or four lines in rhyme, using an array of similes, analogies and other symbols in a clever, tongue-and-cheek play of words to conceal their meanings or answer.
For example:

Ek guni nay yeh gun keena,Hariyal pinjray mein dedeena;
Dekho jadoogar ka kamaal,Daalay hara, nikaalay laal.

Answer: Paan

Pahelis used to be, and still are a part of grandma’s story telling sessions and many games played by children.

Then comes his Dohas, which are written so well and most of the known qawwals start their qawwalis with his dohas. For example: Great Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan has started his most of qawwalis with Khusrau's dohas like

Khusrau raen suhaag ki,
jaagi pi ke sung,
Tun mero mun pi-u ko, dovu bhaye ek rung.
(raen - Night, jaagi - Awake, suhaag - Sign of being married, tun - Body, mun - Heart, pi (piya)- husband/beloved in hindi)

In this so beautifully he has explained his meeting with GOD (which is reffered to as Beloved) like wedding's first night where Bride (khusrau) is meeting his Beloved (God). He remains awake with his Beloved the whole night and in such a way that its just his body that belongs to her, her heart and soul to Beloved. And two become one.

Khusrau darya prem ka, ulti wa ki dhaar,
Jo utra so doob gaya, jo dooba so paar.

(darya - River, ulti wa ki dhaar - Upstream, doob - To drown)

This doha has got such a deep meaning that we cant even think the way Khusrau thought. Here Khusrau is trying to tell n explain the way we should love and who n how one becomes successful in love. He says that Love is like an upstream river where its too difficult to swim but unlike River, in River of HIS(GOD) Love one who jumps drowns and only those who drowns get thru. You have to get deep into HIS love that only when you drown yourself that you can get him.
